Philadelphia Youth Basketball Magic Academy

Kids Helping Schools developed a program with Philadelphia Youth Basketball to create the Magic Academy, an entrepreneurship program aimed at underserved high school students. The program is based on PYB’s mission to create opportunities for young people to self-determine and to aspire to become the architects of their future in positive and purposeful ways.

A Message from our Director

I was honored when my sister left for college and asked that I become the new leader of Kids Helping Schools (particularly since she didn’t choose either of my older brothers!). I was just 6 when Kate created it, but her work has inspired me for as long as I can remember. The mission has stayed the same, although I made some changes to make it fit better with my strengths. I am particularly proud of the entrepreneurship program we have started with Philadelphia Youth Basketball (“PYB”). The PYB Magic Academy has been developed over the past year and debuts in Fall 2022. It will have 15-20 high school participants in a twice-weekly, 10-week program, culminating in a final competition for $10,000 in seed capital to bring their business to fruition. I watched as Kate built KHS into something significant and I promised I would continue to help it grow and expand in new and exciting ways. We have continued to plan fundraisers to increase the grants that we have to distribute, and I have worked hard to evaluate the grants that have been submitted, making the best decisions I can about how to distribute them to all of the qualified schools and programs that apply. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any good ideas for Kids helping Schools, or if you are a school or program looking for funding and you want to learn more.

Thank you,
Charlie

A Message from our Founder

As the founder of Kids Helping Schools, I have had the joy of opening the door to many opportunities for students who would not have otherwise been afforded an extracurricular educational experience. While I know that I have improved their lives in a small way, the experience has been both eye-opening and incredibly rewarding for me. If this is your first time to our site, I hope that we can find a way to get you involved with KHS so that you may share in the satisfaction that it has given me.

I also want to take this opportunity to personally thank our funders, volunteers and other supporters for the chance to do this valuable work. Without your time and/or financial support, we would not have the resources to provide grants to local schools and fund their programming. Together we have the ability to make an enormous difference in the lives of individual students. Please continue to do what you can… I have seen the difference that even a small gesture can make.

Many thanks,
Kate
